I want to install Vista to a seperate internal hard drive, and have several questions 1. Do I need to format the secondary drive? 2. Do I still need to partition? 3. Will this even work? lol 4. what other advice do I need as I am a newbie?

Havent seen this particular setup for dual boot

I am running a triple boot-do you have an open partition that is around 10g for extra space after install? 5381 stand alone takes up 7.48g of one partition of my drive. My tester copy of 5384 with WDK and a couple programs uses up 14.6g on another partition. Xp is on another partition, and a spare partition which holds everything else I keep handy-program applications, pictures, ect for safe keeping. I would make a separate partition to install Vista on before you try to install-there are different partition softwares available to use. I get some bleed over from some XP programs onto Vista boot (windowblinds on IM s) but I can print on XP side until Vista printer drivers are available for me to use. When you install Vista you can format the partition you created (advanced settings on partition selection page) and install to that formatted partition you created-installation is quick now (35 min on my machine) and it does all the work until you set up user information. You will be happier with a dual boot if you have driver issues with Vista. Also, if you do have problems read all of the posts so these people here helping get a little break from repeated questions of the same problem. I use Vista 98% of the time now.

I am trying to read everything, but there is a lot to go through. I havent partitioned the C drive yet, as I just added another hard drive. I understood most of what you wrote, as I have seen most of it before. My question is, (which you may have answered, and I just did not realize), If I have XP on one drive, and Vista on the other drive, will I still get the dual boot screen at startup? Or do I have to install to the same drive? Thank you for your reply, I will definatly keep this stuff in mind, but I hate to try something that will not work. I know I can not install to an external drive, but I did not see a post about an internal drive.

It should show the dual boot across the drives. If your XP is already installed just boot install Vista onto the new HD after formatting the drive using the advanced options on Vista partition page. The Set up is straight forward after that-nothing else to do until user setup pages-pretty simple. It may look like it is frozen at times but give it time to fully install. The latest one did not give me any problems installing at all. There is a bug in the clock settings-just set time zone and then adjust the actual time shown on the clock before saving the settings. You will need to make sure that you are using the exact same Antivirus programs on each boot to keep from having problems with A/V programs interactions. I am using Avast! on my boots and it is free. Thank you for the answer. This is exactly what I needed to know. I use AVG, and Clamwin, both are free and work great, I am just paranoid about these things.

I want to install vista on a secondary internal hard drive, and have a few questions, and will take any suggestions, or just links to where this has been discussed. I am new to this so please be gentle.
1. Is this even possiable 2. Do I still need to format the secondary drive 3. Do I still need to partition 4. I am assuming Windows boot loader will recognize Vista on the secondary drive 5. Any other suggestions, or comments?
